What is PMO Maturity Design and Implementation?
PMO Maturity Design and Implementation are creating a comprehensive plan to help Project Management Offices (PMOs) achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness. It involves designing and implementing a customized framework that aligns with an organization’s goals, enhancing project delivery and overall business success.
The three general types of PMOs are Supportive, Controlling, and Directive.
The Supportive PMO:
- Is the “entry-level” type of PMO, according to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® Guide.
- This type of PMO has little direct control over the project but instead serves as project support when team members ask for more guidance.
A Controlling PMO:
- Exercises reasonable control over the projects and is best suited for organizations with a Balanced Matrix type of Organization structure.
- Provides support and guidance in managing projects.
- It will help with specific tools when needed.
A Directive PMO:
- Has the authority to Direct Projects.
- It has a very high degree of control or complete control over the project by providing resources and support to manage the project.
- Project Managers are assigned to projects and report to this type of PMO.
Within the effort of establishing one of, or a hybrid version of, the three PMO types, the Project Management Maturity Model (commonly shortened to PMMM) is something to understand. It is a matrix illustrating how a company’s project management process evolves. Just as a company changes as it expands, the project management style must also mature.
Lastly, understanding The Five Stages of PMO Maturity allows for organizational expectancy within the process:
- Level 1 – The Initial Process
- Level 2 – Structured Process and Standards
- Level 3 – Organizational Standards and Institutionalized Processes
- Level 4 – Managed Processes
- Level 5 – Optimizing the Process
